Grenoble is a lovely French town situated at the foot of the French Alps. This city of 158,000 is home to many research centers and universities. A cold winter and warm summer make for a year round tourist season in Grenoble.

Situated around two rivers, the Drac and the Isere, the Lion and the Serpant, Grenoble is very easy to explore. You can tour the town on foot, by car, taxi, or by tram. If you’re up to it, you can opt for one of the most popular ways to see the sights; on a bicycle! Very French! It’s actually quite easy to see Grenoble on a bike as it is a very flat town and bike paths run throughout. As well, bike rentals are available by the day or the week.

Grenoble offers visitors many sights to see. You will want to visit Bastille Hill, an ancient fort located above the town. Bastille Hill is reached by cable car and once there you can take a self guided walking tour. Parc Mistral is another popular destination. Found in the center of Grenoble, Parc Mistral offers a skating rink, beautiful paths, and picnic areas. In the park center is the Tower Perret, originally built for an international exhibition.

Grenoble played a large part in World War II. Many French resistance fighters came from the area. The Museum of Resistance and Deportation is dedicated to these brave men and women. The museum is an excellent introduction into this part of France’s history.

While in Grenoble make plans to participate in some of the local sports. As an Alps town, skiing is very big here and several resorts are located about forty-five minutes from the city center. Autrans, Chamrouse, and Duex Alps are all favorites among skiers. Hiking and climbing are also popular. If you choose to hike, consider beginning your hiking adventures at the Maison de la Montagne. The staff here will set you up with free maps and even help you plan your routes.

A great view of Grenoble can be had from above too, thanks to cable cars rise above the town to 260 meters. Spend time exploring the wonderful historical sites and then treat yourself to a light meal while enjoying the view above town.

Many restaurants are located throughout Grenoble. Pick up a copy of the guide du Dahr, a restaurant guide full of wonderful eating establishments, cafes, bars, and nightlife. One highly rated restaurant is ‘A Confesse’, a creperie and fondue restaurant which is located on Drac River. This beautiful place is made even more interesting since you enter the restaurant through a confessional.

Grenoble is serviced by two airports, St. Geoirs forty miles from town and St. Exupery near Lyons, one hundred kilometers from town. Buses run from both airports hourly making travel into the city quite easy. Your holiday can begin on the ride into town as you enjoy the beautiful countryside. Make sure to have your camera ready!
